WHY MAKE IT SO COMPLICATED?
“DO YOU WANT TO SEE MY FAST DRAW?...DO YOU WANT SEE IT AGAIN?”
THE OLD “WINESKIN” OF PHILOSOPHY HAS NEVER WORKED.
I submit that neither Greek philosophy, nor any other existing philosophy, has been able to hold the “new wine” of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I might be wrong, but I don’t think so. Philosophy never has completely worked in explaining things like the Incarnation, Eucharist, Resurrection, Ascension, Assumption, Sacraments, Evil, Suffering or the Cross. For instance, a philosophical explanation of the Eucharist that requires “transubstantiation” is no real explanation at all; it is merely the invoking of divine magic. Christian theology that has been supported by Greek philosophy is fraught with instances of such magic or of, the old refrain, “It’s a mystery.”
In contrast to failed philosophies, I want to share the discovery that, once we properly and fully accept it by faith, the one big mystery of the Blessed Trinity provides us with a whole new “wineskin” that is capable of explaining the “new wine” of Christian experiences by using only plausible explanations, with seamless logic—it works!
THE SIMPLE TRINITARIAN PREMISE WILL WORK.
If we are willing to start with this one enormous leap of faith, accepting the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity as I am about to describe it, I submit that even our poor little human minds can logically and plausibly explain every orthodox doctrine of faith and every genuine discovery of science without having to plow through a lot of dead-end reasoning.
In other words, I submit that, starting with the Blessed Trinity as our first principle, everything else can be explained without resorting to magical interventions or to explanations that are not logical and plausible to the human mind. Rather than trying to explain the Trinity with a philosophy, the Trinity itself becomes a “philosophy” to explain everything else. It even can give a framework for understanding the wise insights of many other philosophies.
Of course, I am only talking about satisfying the rational mind; for a creature to enter fully into relationship with the Trinity, it is always a lifetime process of loving surrenders that has no real beginning or end. Nevertheless, I insist that, if we are willing to be absolutely consistent in our logical reasoning, my explanation of the Blessed Trinity will at least allow us to keep our heads on straight—it works!
UNDERSTANDING “PERSON” IN TRINITY—A FRAMEWORK FOR ALL UNDERSTANDING.
Trinity tells us that the Godhead, the ONLY reality, is composed of two absolutely distinct (yet inseparable) kinds of existence: One type of existence is LIFE and the other type is PERSONS. To repeat, there are two absolutely distinct (yet inseparable) kinds of existence that are in no way part of one another.
LIFE: There is only ONE eternal form of life (i.e. God/Universe). It is a pantheistic-type organism that is, by its very nature, unable to be separated. Absolutely, every other form of life (from a lump of coal to an angel) is created and embodied within that eternal organism; the one God Life knows and loves itself and every part of itself (creatures). It also knows and loves every person that clings to it—“God is Love.”
PERSONS: A person cannot know or love, or even exist, apart from the life it possess; yet, it is no more part of that life than the shadow(s) clinging to a finger dragged across the table. (Whereas a “soul” is part of a human life, a person is not part of life. What most of us call our “person” is really just our human life or ego.) To repeat, a person MUST always be hosted by life, but the person is not part of the life that is hosting it.
The ONE eternal life is hosting THREE co-eternal persons that we call Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
All those created life forms that we recognize as “made in the image and likeness of God,” also will normally host their own co-existent created persons. When these life forms go to their graves, the created persons are then “assumed” by the God Life to be “coheirs to eternal life” with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit persons.
YOU CAN TEST OUT THIS THEORY ON YOUR OWN—IT WORKS!
Admittedly, in this version of the Blessed Trinity, one is required to take a huge leap of faith to accept the existence of persons that are not part of the lives they possess. Although it will seem very strange at first, it is really rather simple. For many, it is TOO simple—“Do you want to see my fast draw?...Want to see it again?” Go ahead. Read it again. Try using it. It works!
