No Longer Blind
"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth." (John 16:12-13)
OF "BLIND" MICE AND MINDS
Here is a cautionary tale: Once upon a time, there was an experiment conducted where two groups of mice were wired up to a single source of electricity. When the scientist pressed a button, both groups received a very painful shock of electrical current. One group of mice were given a button in their cage that would turn off the electricity for themselves AND for the other group of mice. Remember, both groups received exactly the same amount of pain. But, while the group with the button continued to grow and to flourish, the other group started to deteriorate and to die.
· You don't necessarily need this web site to learn about love and suffering. We have all kinds of guidance for that.
· You don't even necessarily need this web site to learn about absolute unconditional love. We have teachings and traditions in our Church that do a much better job at that than I can do here.
· You certainly don't need this web site to learn how to live the Gospel. We have a whole procession of saints and mystics who show us the way to live the Christ life.
YOU NEED THIS WEB SITE TO LEARN A TOTALLY NEW PARADIGM (PHILOSOPHY) DRAWN FROM THE BLESSED TRINITY THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO AT LEAST UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO LIVE. This philosophy avoids the kind of magical thinking that turns off and turns away so many people in this scientific and sophisticated society.
NEW WINE NEEDS A NEW WINESKIN
When we put the "new wine" of the Gospel into an "old wineskin" like Greek philosophy, we have always gotten the same results--we ruin the wine and the skin. One of the most common betrayals of our intellect happens when teachers reasonably start us on a philosophical journey only to lead us into that familiar dead end called, "It's a mystery"; or they pull a "deus ex machina." They have God pushing buttons and pulling strings right and left as though he didn't do a very good job of creating in the first place.
TRINITY IS THE NEW WINESKIN (PHILOSOPHY)
I believe that the Christian doctrine of the Blessed Trinity is actually a philosophy that allows us to create a NEW WINESKIN that is much simpler, much more in harmony with what we know from science and much better suited for explaining the Good News of Jesus Christ--it explains what every seeker of truth has been trying to get to. Christians (and everyone else) are trying to love--to overcome separation (evil/death).
Here we have two pictures of creation. The first is a classic picture that most saints and scholars have used. In it we see God as separate from creation. This picture always leaves room for separation, evil and death. The second is a picture of creation made possible by the distinction found in the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity.
THE TRINITARIAN DISTINCTION IS ABSOLUTE
The Blessed Trinity is a revealed truth up front but, once it is accepted fully, all the other "mysteries" can be explained a fortiori--if the greater truth is accepted, all the lesser truths must follow. In other words, if the one absolute, abundant and everlasting God Life is the ONLY life that can possibly exist, than all created and temporary forms of life live, move and have their being within God. And, whatever is done to the least one is done to God.
CHRISTIAN THINKING FOR DUMMIES
Perhaps this web site should be called "Christian THINKING for dummies." I cannot offer anything unique here but a way of freeing the Gospel IN YOUR THINKING. Of course, there is a big difference between thinking and living Christianity. Paul, in the 7th chapter of Romans, basically is saying: I don't understand myself. I do what I didn't want to do, and I don't do what I wanted. That sounds familiar, doesn't it? Then he says: I agree with the law of God in my mind; but in my flesh, there is another law at war with the law of God. Then he asks: Who will save this flesh?
